Pauillac - Blaye

37 miles
+328 ft

Today’s cycling stage takes you deep into Bordeaux’s most iconic wine landscapes. Leaving Pauillac, you follow the legendary Route des Grands Crus, one of the most scenic cycling routes in France : a paradise for wine lovers and cyclists alike. You’ll pedal past the legendary estates of Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Pichon Longueville, Pontet-Canet, and Lynch-Bages, among others.

Their grand façades rise above the vines, each château an emblem of Bordeaux’s winemaking excellence. The route continues through Saint-Julien, Moulis, and Margaux, before reaching Lamarque, a quaint wine-growing port on the estuary. Here you’ll board a small ferry to cross the Gironde Estuary, the largest in western Europe ; a serene passage where sky and water merge in silver tones.

On the opposite bank, you’ll arrive in Blaye, an enchanting fortified town whose Vauban Citadel is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 17th century by Louis XIV’s military engineer Vauban, the fortress, together with Fort Médoc and Fort Paté, formed the famous “lock of the estuary,” protecting Bordeaux from naval attacks. Covering 33 hectares, the citadel’s ramparts, bastions, and cobblestone alleys offer breathtaking views over the river and surrounding vineyards. Blaye is also a lively town, home to bustling markets, artisans, and sunny terraces.

Blaye - Saint-Émilion

40 miles
+1050 ft

Today’s cycling stage takes you through a mosaic of prestigious appellations. Leaving Blaye, you pedal across the Côtes de Blaye AOC vineyards and along the Corniche Fleurie, a scenic road lined with palm trees, oleanders, and oaks : a reminder of the region’s remarkably mild climate.

You soon reach Bourg-sur-Gironde, one of the estuary’s most picturesque villages. Perched on a rocky promontory and encircled by ancient walls, it’s a true architectural gem with cobblestone lanes and stone-built mansions. The route gradually goes up toward the legendary appellations of Fronsac, Pomerol, and Saint-Émilion. Each name evokes excellence: the refinement of Château Angélus, the power of Cheval Blanc, the prestige of Pétrus.
The scenery unfolds in gentle waves. Hills, rivers, and vines spread endlessly to the horizon. Your day ends in Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its medieval lanes, monolithic church, and vast underground network. It’s a landscape unlike any other, where every stone whispers the story of Bordeaux’s winemaking heritage.

After breakfast, you’ll cycle west toward Bordeaux. Your route joins the Roger Lapébie cycle path, a former railway line converted into a peaceful greenway that winds through forests, meadows, vineyards, and charming villages such as Créon, a 13th-century bastide town.

Along the way, you’ll discover Romanesque churches, fortified mills, and serene countryside landscapes. As the city draws near, the skyline opens over the Garonne River. Cross the Pont de Pierre and arrive triumphantly at the magnificent Place de la Bourse, the jewel of 18th-century Bordeaux. A spectacular panorama of classical architecture reflected in the river, the perfect finale to your Bordeaux cycling adventure.
