Your first cycling stage follows the shores of Lake Constance, a vast body of water often described as an inland sea bordered by lush hills. Also called the Swabian Sea, this region captivates with its gentle landscapes and peaceful lakeside villages. Along the way, you’ll pass through Thurgau, famous for its orchards and vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see.

The route is dotted with medieval castles and baroque church towers rising above the scenery. Perfectly maintained bike paths allow you to pedal comfortably through cultivated fields, small streams, and sparkling lake shores. This day offers an ideal introduction to cycle tourism, combining heritage and nature. The stage ends in Tägerwilen or Kreuzlingen, two charming Swiss towns near the German border, perfect for a peaceful evening by the water.

Gradually leaving the lake, you’ll follow the Lower Rhine through a romantic landscape that once charmed Napoleon. Soon you reach Stein am Rhein, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful medieval villages. Its frescoed façades, cobbled streets, and flowered terraces create a unique, almost timeless atmosphere.

A stop is recommended to fully enjoy the town’s charm. In the afternoon, the route follows the river to Schaffhausen, dominated by the imposing circular fortress of Munot. Nearby, the famous Rhine Falls provide a dramatic spectacle: Europe’s largest waterfall thunders down the rocks, a highlight of your cycling route along the Rhine, blending historical richness with nature’s power.

Cyclists will appreciate the balance of this stage, with gentle climbs and pleasant descents set against stunning panoramas.

Along the way, charming villages like Eglisau or Kaiserstuhl invite a break for coffee or a tasting of regional wines. The stage ends in Bad Zurzach, a small town known for its natural thermal springs.

At daybreak, resume cycling along the tranquil Rhine, bathed in soft light illuminating the surrounding hills. In Koblenz, nicknamed the “City of Four Bridges,” the river forms a true link between regions and cultures. Your route continues to Lake Klingnau, an artificial lake that has become an important refuge for migratory birds.

Next, you’ll reach Laufenburg, a picturesque border town whose cobbled streets climb to the remains of an ancient castle overlooking the river. In the evening, you arrive in Rheinfelden, a medieval town founded by the Zähringen dynasty. Known for its breweries, saline baths, and architectural heritage, it offers a pleasant atmosphere. Terraces along the Rhine are perfect for celebrating your day with a local specialty or craft beer.

Gradually, the surroundings become more urban: roads widen, activity intensifies, and Basel’s skyline emerges. The city reveals its bridges spanning the Rhine and its harmonious mix of historic architecture, contemporary art, and Swiss traditions. Take time to stroll through the Old Town, visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, or simply enjoy the lively riverfront. Basel provides a sophisticated and vibrant conclusion to your cycling journey along the Swiss Rhine.

Spend your morning exploring at your own pace. Don’t miss Basel Cathedral, offering stunning views over the river, or the renowned Kunstmuseum Basel, one of Europe’s leading art museums. Take time to stroll along the Rhine promenade and soak in the city’s atmosphere.

In the afternoon, take the train to Lucerne. Nestled on the shores of Lake Lucerne and surrounded by spectacular mountains, Lucerne is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities. Its perfectly preserved historic center delights with colorful houses, lively squares, and charming medieval streets.

Mount Rigi

Start your day with a one-hour scenic cruise across Lake Lucerne to Vitznau. From there, take Europe’s first mountain railway, inaugurated in 1871, to reach the summit of Rigi Kulm. From 1,797 meters above sea level, gaze across the Swiss Plateau, where 13 lakes and over 620 Alpine peaks unfold. Enjoy free time to explore hiking trails, pause at Rigi Kulm Chapel, or dine at one of the summit restaurants.

Continue your excursion on the cogwheel train to the car-free village of Rigi Kaltbad. Stroll through the village square to discover the Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad, an exceptional facility designed by the renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta. If desired, take an easy trail with a gentle climb to the Känzeli viewpoint (approx. 2 km, optional) for a new perspective on the Alps. Descend by cable car with spectacular views of the crystal-clear lake.

A short downhill walk leads to the Weggis pier, once called “the most charming spot” by Mark Twain. From this Lucerne Riviera, capture stunning panoramas before boarding for the return crossing to Lucerne, enjoying the natural scenery one last time.

Mount Titlis

Departing from Lucerne, set off for a memorable day in the charming village of Engelberg, nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps. Engelberg enchants with traditional chalets, picturesque streets, and an authentic Alpine atmosphere, the perfect base for your ascent.

From the village, take the Rotair panoramic cable car to the summit of Mount Titlis. Along the way, marvel at spectacular mountain and glacier views. At the top, explore the year-round Titlis winter kingdom: wander through the Titlis Ice Cave, cross the Cliff Walk—the highest suspension bridge in Europe—and take the Ice Flyer chairlift to reach Glacier Park Titlis, where you can enjoy snow tubing on the glacier.

After this Alpine adventure, return by cable car to Engelberg, then back to Lucerne, concluding a day filled with thrilling landscapes, snow, and breathtaking panoramas.
