Your cycling itinerary

1

Arrival in Fontainebleau

Just a few miles from Paris, the road opens onto another world ; riverside villages, vast forests, and royal castles that have shaped French history. Your cycling holiday begins gently in Melun or Fontainebleau, two gateways to the royal countryside. You’ll be welcomed in an elegant guesthouse or boutique hotel, where your roadbook and route maps await.

In Melun, history lingers in the stones and the reflections of the Seine. Founded over two millennia ago in a bend of the river, the town retains a tranquil, almost provincial charm. Stroll along the river port, taste the local Brie de Melun AOP at the market, and enjoy the calm of the evening. Tomorrow, your bike takes over and the journey will begin along the royal castle route.

Vaux-le-Vicomte and Blandy loop tour

35 miles
+853 ft

Morning light, quiet roads, and the soft murmur of the Seine… Your first real day on the bike begins. The route winds through peaceful plains and villages until, suddenly, the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte rises on the horizon. A masterpiece of harmony by Le Vau, Le Brun, and Le Nôtre, it was here that the grandeur of Versailles was born. Take time to explore the symmetrical gardens or enjoy lunch on the terrace, facing the perfect geometry of Le Nôtre’s vision.

A few miles further lies Blandy-les-Tours, a medieval fortress that seems to emerge from another age. Its stone towers and crenelated walls recall the military might of medieval France. It is a striking contrast to Vaux-le-Vicomte’s elegance. The road continues in peace along the Seine, through Fontaine-le-Port and Samois-sur-Seine, until the forest thickens and the first glimpse of Fontainebleau appears.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Château de Fontainebleau stands as a living chronicle of eight centuries of monarchy. François I brought Italian artists here, Henri IV redesigned its gardens, and Napoleon bade farewell to his troops within its walls. Every stone tells a story. By evening, you’ll understand that a bike trip through France is more than a route. It’s a journey through time.

Fontainebleau - Etampes

34 miles
+984 ft

Today’s cycling stage begins beneath the tall oaks and pines of the Fontainebleau Forest, a vast natural reserve of 25,000 hectares. You’ll follow quiet forest trails to Barbizon, the legendary artists’ village that gave birth to the Barbizon School of painting. The charm of the 19th century still lingers here : cobbled lanes, art galleries, and old inns that once hosted the painters of nature.

Leaving Barbizon, the landscape opens into a patchwork of fields and gentle hills. Pass through peaceful rural villages and stop in Dannemois, known for its picturesque mill once owned by singer Claude François. The day ends in Étampes, a royal city and “Ville d’Art et d’Histoire”. The city is filled with remarkable heritage, from the 11th-century Notre-Dame Collegiate Church to a unique quadrilobate medieval tower. Étampes marks the transition between the Beauce plain and the softly rolling hills to the south.

Etampes - Rambouillet

34 miles
+984 ft

Departing Étampes, you’ll follow a quiet bike path along a gentle river. You'll cycle through meadows and woodlands dotted with farmhouses and small villages. Soon you’ll reach Dourdan, a fortified medieval town and one of the ancient royal gates of the French kingdom. Its 13th-century castle, ramparts, and old market square invite a short break before the forest takes over.

The Rambouillet Forest, expending over 20,000 hectares, is one of France’s most beautiful natural areas for cycling : shaded roads, forest trails, and a sense of deep calm. As you emerge from the woods, the elegant Château de Rambouillet appears, surrounded by a vast park. Once a hunting lodge of François I, it was transformed by Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette into a refined royal residence. The enchanting Shell Cottage, built for the queen, remains one of the finest examples of 18th-century decorative art. Later, Napoleon I and several French presidents used the château as an official retreat, hosting state visits and summits. Today, it’s a serene and cultural stop where history meets the quiet beauty of the forest.

Rambouillet - Versailles

31 miles
+820 ft

This final cycling stage links two of France’s greatest treasures. Leaving Rambouillet, the route enters the Chevreuse Valley, a haven of winding rivers, forested slopes, and charming stone villages. Along the way, discover Romanesque churches, ancient abbeys, and country manors, silent witnesses to centuries of French life.

Gradually, the countryside gives way to grandeur. At last, the majestic silhouette of Versailles emerges. Walking into the palace grounds by bike is a moment to remember ; the long avenues, the fountains, the sheer scale of it all.
Commissioned by Louis XIV in 1661, the Château de Versailles remains one of the world’s greatest architectural achievements. Behind its gilded gates lie more than 2,300 rooms, including the Hall of Mirrors, where major treaties were signed. The State Apartments of the King and Queen embody the elegance and order of classical French art. Outside, the formal gardens stretch across nearly 800 hectares, alive with symmetry, sculpture, and water.
For travelers who love history, culture, and scenic cycling, arriving at Versailles is a fitting finale ; the culmination of five days spent exploring the royal heart of France.
